Our Minor
Footballers got their League campaign of to a winning start when they took on
Castlelyons in Youghal on Tuesday last 7TH February. Missing a few
players due to college and exams, the lads started brightly. Both sides were
evenly matched in the first half. Up front David O’Mahony and Dale Donoghue
were playing well. Jason Murphy and Chris Savage tried hard to keep the Castlelyons
attack at bay. A spell of Indiscipline led to a number of silly frees which the
visitors converted. With five minutes to go to the break Tomas Coleman scored a
well taken goal after great work by David Twomey and Cillian Ansbro. The first
half finished, Youghal 1-2 Castlelyons 0-7.
The second
half saw Ronan O’Sullivan move to midfield and Lee McCarthy introduced at
center back. Right from the throw in Youghal set about winning this game with a
much improved attitude. Colin Keenaghan at center forward started to get on
more ball and our midfield pairing dominated the center of the field which led
to a better supply to the full forward line and after 7 minutes Andrew Joyce
finished a great move to the back of the Castlelyons net. From there the lads
controlled the game and ran out winners on a score line of Youghal 4-7 Castlelyons
1-8. Round 2 of the league see the lads travel to Blarney to take on the home
side on 18th February.

On our first league game of 2012 this under 14 team had to travel the short trip to cloyne with a depleted team due to illness, but all credit to the girls on show you would not have known that we were short seven members of the panel. The Youghal girls took control of this game from the off. Our midfield were at the center off a lot of our a attacking play by setting up our forwards with plenty of good ball, which our forwards took full advantage by takeing some fine scores. The backs put in a super performance by not giving Cloyne any room to mount any attacks on the day. From our goalkeeper to our full forward every girl gave 100% to this team, and as mentors we can not ask for any more, so well done to all. Youghal under 21 footballers traveled to Ovens to play Eire Og in the Glenville tournament. We traveled to this tournament game after winning last year betting Kinsale in the final last year.Unfortunately we traveled with a very inexperience team because of a lot of players unavailable(14 of the panel)but anyway we competed and gave a very good performance even if we left it until the second half. In the first half we elected to play with the wind, but really it went against us.James O mahony had a goal on the board after 5 minute but we got no other score unlike Eire Og who managed to get 2/2. Second half was a little bit different we changed the team around but more importantly we changed our attitude!Eire Og keep on attacking but we managed a few scores,Victor Cahill 0/1,Dale Donoghue 0/1,David O Mahony 0/1,Dylan Power 0/1,James O mahony,0/1,Adrian Curtain 1/0(pen). We travelled
to Killeagh on Wednesday 23rd November to play Castlelyons in the
final of the Under 16 East Region A Grade Hurling League. Both teams started
brightly with Castlelyons taking an early lead helped by a strong wind. Great
work by goalkeeper Kash Ransom and Full back Chris Morrison kept Youghal in the
game. Our midfield pairing of Ronan O’Sullivan and the tenacious Matt Farrell
led the way for Youghal. Up front Aidan O’Neill, Lenny Flynn and Ollie Dempsey
had a good 1st half. The 1st half ended, Youghal 0-3 Castlelyons
0-4.
The second
half saw Chris Savage move to center back and Mark Flaherty to wing back. With
the wind now on our backs we failed to take full advantage. With 10 minutes
left on the clock and the score was Youghal 0-6 Castlelyons 0-9. Chris Morrison moved to midfield and added
energy and drive to the attack. Three minutes later the game sparked into life
as Lenny Flynn finished a great move to the back of the Castlelyons net to set
up the game for a tense finish. Once again Ollie Dempsey stepped up to hit the
winning score after great work by Colin Keenaghan at full forward to win a 65.
When Referee Arthur Murphy blew the final whistle the scoreboard read Youghal
1-7 Castlelyons 0-9.
Mark
Flaherty accepted the trophy from the Chairperson of the East Region Board
Regina Abernathy where he thanked Killeagh for the use of their pitch, the east

Killeagh was
the venue for the A Grade County Final where we played Mayfield. This was a
repeat of the East Region Final. Youghal entered this game on a high after
overcoming a strong Kanturk side the previous week in Copperalley by 1 point.
The game started at a blistering pace with Ollie Dempsey finding the Mayfield
net after 5 minutes. Mayfield responded by putting the Youghal backline under huge
pressure, they led o-7 to 1-1 midway through. Kash Ransom in goals had another
fine game, with Conor Hennessy at full back and Sean Farrell and Harry Oliphant
in the corners working hard to keep the Mayfield attack at bay. When Matthew
Farrell moved to center forward the game turned Youghals way. Ollie Dempsey
scored a great goal after good work in the corner by Cormac O’Callaghan who
provided the perfect ball. The half time score was Youghal 2-5 Mayfield 1-7.
The second
half saw Youghal step it up and with the half back line of Bill McGrath, Chris
Morrison, and Rory Walsh in control with the help of the hard working midfield
pairing of Andrew Joyce and Lenny Flynn. The score of the game came after good
play from Danny Walsh and Ryan Coady who set up Ollie Dempsey. The final score
came after Matthew Farrell broke the ball to Darragh O’Connell who picked out
Ollie Dempsey to finish the game in style. The Final whistle was greeted with
joy by all involved with Eochaill Og. The final score was Youghal 3-12 Mayfield
1-7.

Ollie Dempsey accepted the Cup on behalf of the Youghal team where he thanked
Killeagh for the use of their pitch, Coiste Na og, parents and supporters, team

Youghal 0-04 Castlelyons 0-04
By Derek Kiely In Ballynoe
YOUGHAL and Castlelyons played out a draw in the East Cork junior B football championship final in Ballynoe last Sunday afternoon and as the scoreline indicates, this game was a real battle, with scores at a premium. It took all of twelve minutes for a score to be registered and it came from the boot of the Castlelyons centre field player Colm Spillane from the right wing. Castlelyons had the breeze at their backs in the first half , but were wasteful with three early wide's, two from play and one from a placed ball. Youghal levelled on the 19th minute when Daniel Savage pointed from play with a good score from distance, but immediately Castlelyons re-established the lead with another score from play off the boot of Darren Tobin, raising a white flag. Castlelyons added a further score eight minutes later when Michael Spillane pointed over a close range free, but with the breeze a narrow two point lead at the break was not a great return and six first half wide's could have been very costly. Youghal started well in the second half with a score after just two minutes when half time substitute Ciaran O'Mahony made an immediate impact with a point from play. Youghal had to rely on some great defending from Patrick O'Mahony and Vincent Murray to keep the momentum going and when Adrian Curtin sent over a free on the 45th minute the sides were level. On the 59th minute of play Barry Goggin sent over the score to give Youghal the lead for the first time and Youghal had one hand on the cup, but an outstanding score from the left wing from Castlelyons wing forward Robert Feeney levelled matters and that is the way it ended, meaning that they will have to do it all over again, probably this coming Saturday afternoon back in Ballynoe.
Scorers for Castlelyons: C Spillane, D Tobin, M Spillane and R Feeney 0-1 each.

Youghal 3-4 v Ballinora 2 - 4
It has been a long year for our underage girls with the Minor final having to be played for the 3rd time. The girls took it in their stride though and trained hard while awaiting this date. The first game ended in a draw, with both teams putting up an excellent performance. The replay was the following week and fair play to players and supporters for braving the horrendous weather, the game went to half time and was then cancelled due to health and safety reasons with the weather. Third time lucky they say and so it proves for youghal's minor camogie team. Youghal settled early with a well taken free from Shannen Joyce who was carrying an injury into the game. Both teams exchanged attacks before the busy Ellie Budds made a fine run up the wing centering the ball which the goal keeper failed to control and Emily Roach was on hand to finish it by blasting the ball to the back of the net. Youghal battled on continuing to dominate on the field before Ashley O Brien managed to score an impressive goal at 18 minutes. Youghal were now leading 2-1 to no score when Ballinora registered their first goal from a 45 at 22 minutes. This was quickly followed by a goal at 24 minutes after some loose defending in midfield. The game had suddenly changed with youghal now under pressure. Then a moment of controversy as a perfectly good goal by Shannen Joyce was disallowed. A further point and what seemed like a goal scored from inside the square sent a now more confident Ballinora a point ahead at half time. Youghal resumed the second half with Shannen Joyce scoring a point to level the scores. A goal followed by the same player to put Youghal again 3 points ahead. Shannen scored again on the 43rd minute to put Youghal 4points clear. The game then entered a phase where Youghal defence was under constant pressure. Each player then rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly for the cause. The impressive Niamh Quill and Chloe Daly combo worked hard to keep the Ballinora team at bay which proved a success as the final whistle blew and the youghal team were crowned County champions. The final score stood at 3-4 to 2-4 to Youghal. Team – Amy Hennessy, Gemma O’Brien, Shannon Watson, Niamh Crowley, Nora Sheehan, Michaela Dalton, Chloe Daly, Aishling Siochru, Niamh Quill, Leah Broderick, Roisin O’Keeffe (C ) Emily Roche, Ashley O’Brien, Shannen Bulman – Joyce, Ellie Budds, Sarah O’Brien, Allanah Finn, Jane Walsh. |

Youghal 0-11 Aghada 0-08 By Derek Kiely In Killeagh
LAST Friday at Pairc Ui Chinneide in Killeagh the semi final replay of the East Cork Junior 'B' Football Championship was won by Youghal after an impressive display against Aghada. In the original semi final Youghal felt that they had left it behind them on the night, but last Friday night’s performance was far superior from the Youghal boys and in the end they were good value for the win. Unlike the original match Youghal started far better with lots of possession early and after just two minutes of play Daniel Savage had the first white flag raised in the match with a very well taken ‘45’ for Youghal. Over the next four minutes Youghal had kicked two wides and Aghada got themselves into the match and levelled with a very good point from play off the boot of Padraig Wall. Both sides cancelled each other out over the next eight minutes with both Youghal and Aghada kicking several wides. Alan Frahill O’Connor then settled Youghal nerves on the 16th minute with a well taken free to re-gain the lead. Then seconds later the Youghal men struck again with a great score from Andrew Sheehan from miles out to establish a two point lead. Youghal dominated the ball for several minutes after that score, but had to wait until the 25th minute to add another score from Keith McCarthy, then instantly from the resulting kick out Youghal had another point from Alan Frahill O’Connor to establish a four point lead, but on the stroke of half time the margin was reduced to three points when David Creedon pointed from play. Creedon was on target just seconds into the second half with yet another pin point accurate free for the Rostellan men, leaving two between the sides. Youghal’s Adrian Curtin responded with a well taken free on the left side 35 metres out on the 35th minute. Then Curtin was on target just three minutes later from the same tight angle and the four point advantage was re-established. Since the resumption of the second half both sides were level in terms of possession and both defences were on top. Creedon popped a free over for Aghada on the 39th minute, then amazingly Curtin made it three out of three from the same tight spot on the left side thirty five metres out again, which was a magnificent run of tough free’s for the Youghal man. Creedon was proving deadly from the placed ball and rose another white flag on the 42nd minute and again there was a goal between the sides. Youghal increased the pressure with 15 minutes to go, taking several close range shots but not finding a break through, down to some very good Aghada defending, but after five blocked shots Anthony Frahill O’Connor took the initiative close in and popped the ball over for Youghal. Then incredibly from the same location on the pitch Adrian Curtin made it four long range pointed free’s out of four, this time dropping in off the goal post to give Youghal five point lead with twelve minutes remaining. Padraig Wall sent a score from play over for Aghada on the 48th minute and Youghal’s full back line through the very impressive Philip Monaghan had to battle hard as the Rostellan men came in search of a goal. Youghal needed something fast to keep the pressure off and with nine minutes remaining the outstanding Aaron Kenny sent Barry Goggin free and Goggin made no mistake putting the ball over. Aghada weren’t giving up just yet and rallied with two late scores from David CAreedon from play and also a great score from Shane Wall, but Youghal didn’t panic and saw out the remainder of this game to set up an East Cork Final with Castlelyons on Sunday the 13th of November, with the venue to be announced.
