Well done to all the Youghal girls. Minor County Final 6th November 2011 Youghal 3-4 v Ballinora 2 - 4
It has been a long year for our underage girls with the Minor final having to be played for the 3rd time. The girls took it in their stride though and trained hard while awaiting this date. The first game ended in a draw, with both teams putting up an excellent performance. The replay was the following week and fair play to players and supporters for braving the horrendous weather, the game went to half time and was then cancelled due to health and safety reasons with the weather. Third time lucky they say and so it proves for youghal's minor camogie team. Youghal settled early with a well taken free from Shannen Joyce who was carrying an injury into the game. Both teams exchanged attacks before the busy Ellie Budds made a fine run up the wing centering the ball which the goal keeper failed to control and Emily Roach was on hand to finish it by blasting the ball to the back of the net. Youghal battled on continuing to dominate on the field before Ashley O Brien managed to score an impressive goal at 18 minutes. Youghal were now leading 2-1 to no score when Ballinora registered their first goal from a 45 at 22 minutes. This was quickly followed by a goal at 24 minutes after some loose defending in midfield. The game had suddenly changed with youghal now under pressure. Then a moment of controversy as a perfectly good goal by Shannen Joyce was disallowed. A further point and what seemed like a goal scored from inside the square sent a now more confident Ballinora a point ahead at half time. Youghal resumed the second half with Shannen Joyce scoring a point to level the scores. A goal followed by the same player to put Youghal again 3 points ahead. Shannen scored again on the 43rd minute to put Youghal 4points clear. The game then entered a phase where Youghal defence was under constant pressure. Each player then rolled up their sleeves and worked tirelessly for the cause. The impressive Niamh Quill and Chloe Daly combo worked hard to keep the Ballinora team at bay which proved a success as the final whistle blew and the youghal team were crowned County champions. The final score stood at 3-4 to 2-4 to Youghal. Team – Amy Hennessy, Gemma O’Brien, Shannon Watson, Niamh Crowley, Nora Sheehan, Michaela Dalton, Chloe Daly, Aishling Siochru, Niamh Quill, Leah Broderick, Roisin O’Keeffe (C ) Emily Roche, Ashley O’Brien, Shannen Bulman – Joyce, Ellie Budds, Sarah O’Brien, Allanah Finn, Jane Walsh. It is not over yet though as the U16’s are playing the League semi final with date yet TBC. Youghal Camogie Club AGM is on 16th November, @ 7.30pm @ GAA Pavillion. The Club is growing every year and more and more medals are entering the Club. It shows the focus and the good work that the committee and players alike strive for. We would be delighted with new members and we welcome people that would like to get involved with the Club. Minor County Final castle Road 16th October What a thriller – if you weren’t there you missed a cracker of a game. Both teams showed magnificent heart and determination to end this County final in a draw. The game started with great zest from the throw in, Shannon Watson was on top form in full back making some great blocks throughout the game, the backs were unlucky when we gave away a free inside the first ten minutes which resulted in a fine goal scored by Ballinora. The Youghal side never dropped their heads though and plugged away with corner back Norah Sheehan giving a great ball to Roisin O’Keeffe who seemed to be all over the pitch, she ran from midfield to the forward line landing a lovely ball right into the hand of Shannen Bulman Joyce who is always in the right place at the right time and directed a point over the bar. After a dominant Youghal side kept working the ball up the field, Emily Roche was on hand to score the goal that we badly needed. The spirits were lifted even further when Ellie Budds who looked unstoppable on the day was awarded a free from outside the 45. Great team work was shown throughout the team but it has to be noted the runs that Roisin O’Keeffe went on to produce most of the scores on the day. Ellie and Emily were again showing great team work when Ellie passed a lovely ball across the square to Emily who in turn hand passed it to shannen who was just off target on the goal. It gave the massive Youghal support on the side line something to be proud of when they saw that chances were being made. The chance came again soon after this play with Shannen Bulman Joyce leaving the Ballinora keeper with no chance. Amy Hennessey was absolutely brilliant in goal stopping 2 goal chances one after the other just before the whistle for half time. The score line read Youghal 1-3 Ballinora 0-3 at half time. The second half was again as tough as the first with Ballinora throwing everything at the Youghal side, but Youghal’s Roisin O’Keeffe was unstoppable with yet more surging runs from half back positions again the corner forwards battled for every ball and made it easy for full forward Shannen Bulman Joyce to put another goal in the back of the net. Ballinora were awarded a free which they took a fine score from. From the Youghal puck out the girls went on another surging run, another great hand pass from Emily Roche to Leah Broderick who was unlucky not to have taken the score. The ball was quickly moved down the field by the Ballinora backs and another fine save was made by Amy Hennessey, there was a scuffle on the line with the umpire closely watching the goal line, the ball was coolly kicked in by one of the Ballinora forwards. Youghal were awarded another free when Roisin was taking down on one of her runs, Shannen Bulman Joyce took it in her stride to knock the free over the bar. Ballinora answered the score by a fantastic score off the hurl, this type of score is a rarity in underage camogie and credit where credit is due, the side line was impressed. The teams were level with 5 minutes on the clock. Youghal pushed on and took every chance they could get, it was tough to watch them almost clinch the title but they were unlucky with 3 consecutive wides. Both teams earned great respect on the day as it was a pure joy to watch a great camogie game. The final will be replayed with date TBC. Please check us out on Face Book for the details of the match.

Cork County Under 16 Camogie Championship 1st Round
Youghal 3-08 Sarsfields 1-00
By Derek Kiely In Riverstown
YOUGHAL'S Camogie under 16 team are through to the last eight of the Cork County Under 16 Camogie Championship after a very convincing victory over Sarsfields in Riverstown on Sunday last. Youghal took the lead through the full forward Shannon Bulman Joyce who struck over a '45' on the fifth minute. But then out of the blue Sars broke out of defence on the 9th minute and a shot attempt for a point dipped over the Youghal goal keeper Niamh Kellly into the goal, but this was to be the only score from Sars in the match. Youghal peppered the Sarsfields goal, but the Sars goal keeper was in fine form making save after save, but eventually something had to give. A Free from Shannon followed by a fine point from the full forward levelled matters 7 minutes before half time. Youghal were now buzzing and then Shannon Bulman Joyce gave Youghal the lead with three minutes to go to half time, then seconds later a pass from Aoife McCarthy found Ellie Budds on the left wing and the corner forward rained in towards the Sars goal and duly buried the ball into the net. On the stroke of the short whistle Shannon popped over another pointed free and Youghal led by five points at the break. The second half was dominated by Youghal with some brilliant performances especially from Chloe Landers, Leah Broderick and Amerah Hickey. Just three minutes into the second half and Shannon Bulman Joyce pointed from play on the left wing off the right shoulder. After five minutes and following a string of great saves from the Sarsfields keeper Shannon was on target again, this time from the right. On the 47th minute the same combination for the first Youghal goal Aoife McCarthy and Ellie Budds linked up again. Aoife again supplied the crucial pass and Ellie finished with another great goal and Youghal led by ten points with 13 minutes remaining. Then the goal of the match three minutes later when Shannon Bulman Joyce picked up the ball on the right side and from 20 meters out she blasted the ball into the left corner of the Sarsfields net. Youghal added another pointed free through Shannon and finished convincing winners and booked their place into the Cork County Quarter Final.

The minors took on Banteer on a very wild Sunday evening. The team traveled 2 hours to North Cork with only one thing on their mind. The game started off well with Shannen Bulman sending a very fine point from play over the bar. Midfield Niamh Quill could be found everywhere on the night and was an inspiration to her team mates on how the game of camogie is to be played. An inspiring effort from centre back Chloe Daly kept the centre back from getting on the ball. Youghal played with the4 wind in the first half and there was a huge amount of ball given to the full forward line. Ellie Budds was on hand to put the ball in the back of the net, a task that she has made her own in the last year. Ellie seems to be in the right place when opportunities arise for her. The Youghal side had it tough in the first half keeping the centre half line at bay but great play from the backs resulted in only one point from the Banteer side. At half time the score line read 1-5 to 0-1 to Youghal. A pep talk from the side line gave the girls the encouragement that they deserved and they went in to the second half with confidence. The second half was well fought and a great stop from Amy Hennesey in goal kept the Banteer side from going ahead. The Youghal side never left their guard down and they battled on to tally 3 more points from play from full forward Shannen Bulman Joyce. The girls came up trumps when the final whistle blew they came home with a victory with a score line of 1-8 to 1-6. Team – Amy Hennessey, Nora Sheehan, Shannon Watson, Gemma O’Brien, Chaela Dalton, Chloe Daly, Aishling Siochru, Niamh Quill, Leah Broderick, Alannah Finn, Roisin O’Keeffe ( C ) Ellie Budds, Shannen Bulman Joyce, Aishling O’Brien. The girls now progress to the next round of the Minor Championship with dates of next game to be confirmed. Youghal V Na Piarsaigh Junior B Semi Final 2-7 to 3-5 Na Piarsaigh progressed to the final where they beat Sliabh Rua by a goal. Well done to Na Piarsaigh who lifted the Junior B title. |

U13A Imokilly League 2011 Youghal 1-2 Cobh 1-0 Youghal and Cobh played the first game of the Imokilly League competition on Monday 15th August, and it turned out to be a very exciting game in such bad weather on the night. Youghal under pressure in the first 10 mins of the game where Cobh took advantage and scored a great goal. This in turn woke up the Youghal girls and return the score with 2 points from Erin Galvin in play. Youghal continue the pressure through the first half, leaving the scoreline to 1-0 to Youghal’s 0-2pts at half time. Rain continued to pour down but both teams did not leave this interfer with their game and continued to play great camogie throughout the second half. With Louise Dempsey in half back position not leaving very much pass her and Shauna O Connell kept feeding the ball into the forwards, giving them plenty of work to do, but with the strong Cobh backs Youghal were finding it hard to break through, but eventually just before full time whistle Ciara Crowley found the back of the net. Youghal scorers: Ciara Crowley 1-0, Erin Galvin 0-2 Team: Lydia Blanke, Chloe Landers, Niamh Roche, Laura White, Aine Forest,Lousie Dempsey, Eimear Farrell, Catriona O Keeffe, Shauna O Connell, Amy Herlihy, Erin Galvin, Aoife O Neill, Ciara Crowley, Clodagh O Keeffe, Fidelma Falvin,Megan Brophy. Next game: U13's v Carrigtwohill 31st August U15 league V Killeagh away @ 7pm 26th August U8 & U10 Blitz in Dungorney @ 6.30pm 28th August Juniors TBC The Juniors were in action again last Friday night in the third game of the Championship. There were 4 teams in this round robin fixture - Ballincollig, Glen Rovers, Youghal and Castlemagner. Ballincollig and Castlemagner had 2 wins each under their belt and Youghal had one. Going into the game against Castlemagner they knew they had to win in order of qualifying for the next round. Youghal had met Castlemagner earlier this year in the league but Youghal travelled there with alot of their team injured, Castlemagner thought this would be another walk in the park for them. The game started off well and it didnt take long for it to get into a good rythmn. Youghal were not aloud to hurl much with the phsicalllity that Castlemagner brought to the game. The new look centre half side, of Catherine O'Donoghue, Ashleigh Corcoran and Kerri Hancock played a fantastic game not leaving the full back line with very little to do. When the ball did come back there which was not to often Michaela Dalton was on top of her marker and did not give her an inch. Shona cunningham was on form again with her free taking knocking over 8 points from frees. Shanne Bulman who was left out of the starting 15 against the Glen, showed exactly what she is all about by scoring a lovely point from play in the first half and was undoubtly a great accet to the team on the night. Siobhan Downing was back to her old trickery again this week by putting another goal to the back of the net and popping a fine point over from play. All our subs got a run and when they came on played a very important role which proves what skill there is in the Youghal side. The juniors now must await the draw for the next game to see who they will meet, have no doubt about it though, they are side in this Junior B Championship that know they are in with a great chance of bringing home some more silver ware this year. Happy Birthday to our Chairperson Janette Power. Well done to Suzie Fitzgibbon and Ashling Siochru on their fantastic leaving cert results. |

Youghal V Glen Rovers Junior B championship. Before the game they had bad news with their starting corner back Ann O'Connell having to pull out of the game due to injury. From the throw in Youghal were on top of their game. looking to get revenge after giving away so many frees the week before against Ballincollig the girls knew exactly what they had to do. Their disipline was fantastic throughout the game. The game got off to a great start for the youghal team with Siobhán Downing scoring a super goal, it was her against 3 defenders and the goal keeper, but the full forward kept her composer and volleyed a perfect goal to the back of the net. Captain Siobhan Downing had been out of the game due to injury for the last number of months and she proved her worth with this perfect display. Youghal continued to dominate the game scoring another 3 points 2 of which were scored by Shona Cunningham and another from Leah Broderick. Young Leah who has returned to the club with a Munster medal U16 with Cork showed exactly why she is a starting forward on the team. Amy Motherway was also on hand to score a great goal from play, she looked unstoppable throughout the game, making it very dificult for the back to mark her. Shona Cunningham was on top form for the Youghal side scoring another 2 points before Siobhán Downing struck again scoring another goal. Siobhán Downing and Shona Cunningham were to score another 4 points between them before the half-time whistle blew leaving the half-time score at 4-11 to no score. The second half started off with a bang with Katie Sloane making a great run up the field resulting in a cracking goal from the mid-fielder. Shona Cunningham and Shannen Bulman Joyce who both sent the ball soaring over the bar leaving the final score at a whopping 5-14 to no score leaving the Youghal side victorious. This was a great victory for the girls as the week before the Glen were only beaten in extra time to Castlemagner. The girls now face Castlemagner in the next round of the Championship and they know exactly what they are up against with Castlemagner beating them margenly in the league. The Glen Rovers game is now behind them and the girls are hard at training this week to prove their worth in the next round. After winnning the Junior C last year the Youghal side ar in the thick of this Junior B chanpionship and will not lay down without a fight and now with all the girls back to full fitness they are a source to be reckoned with in the Championship. Fixtures for the coming week - U 15's Youghal V Fr O'Neills Thursday 18th @ 7.15 at home Junior B Youghal V Castlemagner (away) Friday 19th @ 7.30pm U11 Blitz in Aghada @ 10am Saturday 20th August. |

Training times for Underage: U8/U10s - Mondays @ 6.30pm U11s - Mondays @ 5.30pm Newcomers welcome. U15 first Imokilly league game Wednesday 3rd August The girls played the game away to Sars. The improvement since the start of the year has been fantastic and the encouragemnet from the sideline is also a great boost for the young girls. Best of luck also to Emily Roche as she continues with the Cork U15 team on Saturday 12th August. Junior B Championship. Youghal v Ballincollig 7 August 2011 Youghal played the first of 3 games in a round robin series against Ballincollig last Sunday night in Ballincollig. On the way to the field it looked like the game would be cancelled as the forcast was horendous, but just before the warm up the sun came out and it was a perfect evening for the game. Conditions were a little slippery and it took both teams a few minutes to settle into the play. The game started off slowly and Ballincollig were the first on the score board scoring from a free. Youghal were given 2 consecutive frees from the 45 but were unable to hold their composure and both went wide. A change of free taker and Edel O'Connell stepped up to the plate and knocked a fine point over from a placed ball. Ballincollig scored another 2 points from frees leaving the score at 0-3 to 0-1 to the Ballincollig team. Shannen Joyce was nest to score for the youghal side sending a great score over from play. Surging runs from Edel O'Connell and Catherine O'Donoghe into the forward line gave the side line something to cheer about, but it was unlucky for Youghal on the night as they hit the cross bar 4 times, 3 in the first half and once in the second. Another 2 frees were awarded and Ballincollig took all their chances sending both points over the bar. Leah Broderick scored a great answering point from play from the half forward line. At half-time the score stood at 0-5 to 0-3 to Ballincollig. there was no lying down at half time and subsitute Siobhan Downing, who is still not back to full fitness with an ankle injury put a fine point over after 1 minute of the second half, but Ballincollig weren't far behind scoring 2 points from frees. The Youghal side were trailing by 3 points but never dropped the heads, they continued to battle hard and a goal always looked inevitable. Great runs again from the half back line that were now conecting well with the half forwards made space for each other. The Youghal tactics were starting to come together and a dangerous ball from the youghal forward line resulted in a quick goal from Kerry Handcock leaving the score level. All was looking well with a minute to go then a free was awarded to ballincollig in their half-forward line resulting in a point for Ballincollig leaving the Ballincollig team victourious at 0-8 to 1-4. The Youghal juniors now take on The Glen on Friday 12th August at the Top field at 7pm please support the girls.
